Import a waypoint KMZ into DJI Fly by hand
DJI Fly cannot import a KMZ directly – but you can replace the file of a placeholder mission. The same steps work for any WPML KMZ, including the ones MavicMapper exports.
Step by step
- Export your mission
Export in MavicMapper and unzip: one mission_01.kmz per battery, in DJI’s WPML format (a plain Google Earth KML will not work). - Create a placeholder in DJI Fly
DJI Fly → Waypoint → add two points anywhere, save and name it. One placeholder per KMZ. - Open the controller’s files
Connect the RC by USB-C (or use a file manager) and browse to Android/data/dji.go.v5/files/waypoint/. On newer Android versions this folder is hidden – use a PC or the ADB method. - Find the placeholder folder
Sort the GUID-named folders by modified date: the newest is your placeholder. Inside is one .kmz named exactly like the folder. - Swap the file
Back up the original, rename your KMZ to exactly the same file name and copy it into the folder. DJI Fly only updates missions by overwriting that exact file. - Reopen in DJI Fly
Force-close DJI Fly and reopen it. Open the placeholder – the editor loads your route. Check heights, speed, gimbal, actions and RTH height. - Set the camera and fly
Waypoint files cannot carry exposure: dial in shutter, ISO, ND, white balance and focus from MavicMapper’s summary.txt, then fly within visual line of sight.
Heads-up: drone model code
Some DJI Fly versions require the drone model code inside the KMZ to match your aircraft. MavicMapper’s USB upload copies it from the placeholder automatically; for manual import, load a KMZ created by DJI Fly as a template in the planner (“DJI Fly file” setting) before exporting.
Manual file changes are at your own risk – always keep a backup.
Frequently asked questions
Can DJI Fly import a KMZ file?
Not directly. Replace the KMZ inside a saved placeholder mission folder with your own file of exactly the same name, then restart DJI Fly.
Where are DJI Fly waypoint missions stored?
In Android/data/dji.go.v5/files/waypoint/ – one GUID-named folder per mission, each with a KMZ of the same name.
Why does DJI Fly reject my KMZ?
Usually a wrong file name, a non-WPML file (plain KML) or a drone model code that does not match your aircraft.
